Uttarakhand is a year-round destination — but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. A summer trip to Mussoorie feels nothing like a winter visit to Auli, and monsoon in the Char Dham belt is a completely different proposition from a crisp October pilgrimage. Knowing when to visit which part of Uttarakhand can make the difference between a memorable group tour and a frustrating one.
Summer: March to June
This is peak season across Uttarakhand, and for good reason. The plains are sweltering, while Uttarakhand's hill stations offer temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. Roads are clear, all destinations are accessible, and the energy at pilgrimage sites is high as temples open for the season.
Best destinations in summer
- Mussoorie & Dehradun: The classic hill station escape. Pleasant weather, bustling Mall Road, and easy access from Delhi.
- Nainital & Ranikhet: Lake country at its best. Boating, nature walks, and colonial-era charm.
- Char Dham circuit: May–June is the prime window for Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
- Valley of Flowers: Opens in June. A UNESCO World Heritage Site bursting with alpine wildflowers.
Group tour tip: Book your tempo traveller at least 2 weeks in advance for May–June. This is our busiest period, and vehicles fill up fast.
Monsoon: July to September
Monsoon brings heavy rainfall, especially in the Garhwal region. Landslides and road closures are common, and Char Dham routes can be disrupted for days. However, this is also when Uttarakhand is at its greenest and most dramatic.
Destinations that work in monsoon
- Dehradun & Mussoorie: Accessible even during rains, though fog and drizzle are constant companions.
- Rishikesh: Rafting shuts down during peak monsoon, but the town remains accessible and the Ganges is spectacular.
Our honest advice: Unless you are flexible with your dates and prepared for possible delays, avoid mountain Uttarakhand during July–August. The lower regions like Haridwar and Rishikesh remain accessible.
Autumn: October to November
Our favourite season. The monsoon has washed everything clean, the skies are crystal clear, and the Himalayan peaks are visible from dozens of kilometres away. Crowds thin out, prices drop slightly, and the temples are still open before the winter closures.
Best destinations in autumn
- Chopta & Tungnath: Golden meadows and the world's highest Shiva temple. Spectacular trekking conditions.
- Binsar & Almora: Panoramic Himalayan views without the summer crowds.
- Char Dham (last window): Temples close in late October or early November. A quieter, more meditative pilgrimage experience.
Group tour tip: October is ideal for corporate retreats and college trips. Pleasant weather, moderate prices, and availability is better than summer.
Winter: December to February
High-altitude roads close, including the Char Dham routes. But lower and mid-altitude destinations transform into winter wonderlands. Snowfall in Auli, Munsiyari, and Chopta draws adventure seekers, while Rishikesh and Haridwar remain comfortable.
Best destinations in winter
- Auli: Uttarakhand's premier skiing destination. Snow-covered slopes and jaw-dropping views of Nanda Devi.
- Mussoorie: Occasional snowfall turns the hill station magical. Carry heavy woolens.
- Haridwar & Rishikesh: Mild winter days, fewer tourists, and a peaceful atmosphere for spiritual visits.
- Jim Corbett National Park: Winter is prime wildlife season. Jeep safaris have the best sighting rates between November and February.
Important: Check road conditions before departure in winter. Our drivers monitor conditions daily and will advise if a route is unsafe.
Quick month-by-month reference
- March–April: Spring blooms, mild weather, temples opening. Great for early-season trips.
- May–June: Peak season. Hot plains push everyone to the hills. Book early.
- July–August: Monsoon. Avoid mountain routes. Stick to lower regions.
- September: Monsoon retreating. Roads reopening. Lush greenery everywhere.
- October–November: Best overall conditions. Clear skies, moderate temperatures, thinner crowds.
- December–February: Cold but beautiful. Snow destinations and wildlife parks at their best.
No matter when you visit, a tempo traveller gives your group the flexibility to adapt to conditions. If a road is closed, we reroute. If the weather clears unexpectedly, we extend the day. That flexibility is something no bus schedule or train ticket can offer. Call us at +91-9599639342 to plan your Uttarakhand trip for the perfect season.
