Complete Char Dham Yatra Guide 2026: Registration, Routes & Best Time to Visit

The Char Dham Yatra is more than a pilgrimage — it is a journey through some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth, touching the sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalayas. Every year, lakhs of devotees undertake this circuit, and 2026 promises to be no different. But the yatra demands serious preparation. In this guide, we share everything you need to know — from registration to road conditions to the best vehicle for the journey.

Char Dham Yatra 2026: opening dates & registration

The four shrines typically open between late April and early May, depending on auspicious dates declared by the Uttarakhand government. In 2026, expect the portals to open around the last week of April for Yamunotri and Gangotri, and the first week of May for Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Mandatory registration is required for all pilgrims. You can register online at the official Uttarakhand government portal or through authorised centres in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun. Carry your registration slip, a valid photo ID, and a medical fitness certificate if you are above 60 years of age.

The classic Char Dham route from Delhi

The most popular circuit follows this sequence:

  • Delhi → Haridwar → Barkot (base for Yamunotri)
  • Barkot → Uttarkashi (base for Gangotri)
  • Uttarkashi → Guptkashi (base for Kedarnath)
  • Guptkashi → Badrinath
  • Badrinath → Rudraprayag → Haridwar → Delhi

Total road distance: approximately 1,600–1,800 km. Most groups complete the yatra in 10–12 days, including rest days and darshan time at each shrine.

Best time to visit

The temples remain open from late April to early November, but not every month is equally suitable:

  • May–June: The most popular window. Roads are clear, weather is pleasant, and the spiritual energy during opening season is unmatched. Book your tempo traveller well in advance for this period.
  • September–October: Post-monsoon charm with lush green mountains, fewer crowds, and crisp mountain air. Roads may have occasional patches from monsoon damage, but they are generally restored by September.
  • Avoid July–August: Heavy monsoon rains cause landslides, road closures, and dangerous driving conditions. We strongly advise against travelling during these months.

Day-by-day itinerary (11 days)

Day 1: Delhi to Haridwar (230 km, 6 hrs)

Begin with a holy dip in the Ganges at Har Ki Pauri and attend the mesmerising Ganga Aarti at sunset. Rest well — the mountain roads start tomorrow.

Day 2: Haridwar to Barkot (200 km, 8 hrs)

Wind through the Shivalik hills into the Yamuna valley. Barkot is a small, peaceful town — perfect for acclimatisation.

Day 3: Yamunotri Darshan

Drive to Janki Chatti and trek 6 km to Yamunotri temple. The trail passes through forests and small waterfalls. Ponies and palanquins are available for those who need them.

Days 4–5: Gangotri Darshan via Uttarkashi

Drive to Uttarkashi, then continue to Gangotri. The temple sits at 3,100 metres amidst towering peaks and glacial streams — no trekking required.

Days 6–7: Kedarnath Darshan via Guptkashi

The most challenging leg. From Gaurikund, trek 16 km to Kedarnath at 3,583 metres. Helicopter services are available for those unable to trek. The stone temple against the snow-capped Himalayan backdrop is an unforgettable sight.

Days 8–9: Badrinath Darshan

Drive through the spectacular Alaknanda valley to Badrinath. Visit Mana Village, Bhim Pul, and the Tapt Kund hot springs.

Days 10–11: Return to Delhi via Rudraprayag and Haridwar

A long but scenic return journey. Stop at the sacred confluences of Devprayag and enjoy a farewell Ganga Aarti in Haridwar before heading home.

Why a tempo traveller is the best vehicle for Char Dham

The Char Dham route involves serious mountain driving — single-lane roads carved into cliffsides, steep gradients, and hairpin bends at altitude. A tempo traveller handles these conditions far better than a large bus, which cannot navigate narrow hill roads, or a small car, which lacks the luggage space and comfort for a 11-day journey. Our drivers are Char Dham specialists who have completed this circuit dozens of times. They know every curve, every fuel stop, and every safe overnight parking spot. For a pilgrimage of this magnitude, experienced driving is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

Essential packing tips

  • Warm layers — temperatures drop below 5°C at higher altitudes, even in May
  • Sturdy trekking shoes for Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks
  • Rain jacket — mountain weather changes within minutes
  • Personal medications, including altitude sickness tablets if prescribed
  • Cash — ATMs are scarce and unreliable in mountain towns
  • A small daypack for treks (leave heavy luggage in the tempo traveller)

The Char Dham Yatra is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience. With proper planning, the right vehicle, and an experienced driver, it becomes not just manageable but deeply rewarding. Call us at +91-9599639342 to plan your 2026 Char Dham Yatra today.
